North Padre Island sits with the Gulf of Mexico on one side, accessible by the Packery Channel, and the quiet waters of Laguna Madre on the other. The park hosts a sea turtle hatching program during the summer and guests are invited to witness the release of thousands of little baby turtles into the ocean. There are fishing spots for everything from cat fish to shark (please note that proper licensing is required), so make sure to pack your tackle. Padre Island National Seashore offers ranger-guided activities and lectures and a paved nature trail that's perfect for every age and mobility. This landscape is home to around 380 species of birds, as well as a variety of wildlife that includes ghost crabs, coyotes, and deer. The highlight of North Padre Island is the Padre Island National Seashore, which protects 70 miles of pristine coastline. Nestled between protected wetlands, pretty sand dunes, and a long stretch of shoreline, our North Padre Island vacation rentals are a true respite from the real world. For example, the point thirty-seven miles south of Malaquite is referred to as the "thirty-seven mile marker", even though no marker is present there.North Padre Island is located near Mustang Island, 30 miles down-island from Port Aransas and 33 miles from Corpus Christi. Mileage points between the five-mile markers are usually referred to as "markers" rather than "points". Markers are spaced five miles apart down the Gulf shoreline from Malaquite's southern boundary to indicate distance. The shells making up Big Shell mostly are common arcs, coquina, cockles, and quahogs, as at Little Shell, but they are bigger than the ones at Little Shell and thus the name.Īreas outside these beaches are not named and are usually designated only by their distance from Closed Beach's southern boundary. Traveling beyond South Beach is best done in a four-wheel-drive vehicle. However, farther south the sand loosens and the beaches become soft. As with North Beach, South Beach's sand is usually packed and two-wheel-drive vehicles normally have little problems traversing it. South Beach extends from Closed Beach's southern boundary approximately seven miles to the beginning of Little Shell Beach, which is not marked. Closed Beach's southern boundary is used as the zero point to measure distances on the remaining 60+ miles of beach. Camping is permitted at the campground, but not on other areas of Closed Beach. This beach includes the Malaquite Beach area located at the park's Visitor Center and the Malaquite Campground. This beach is closed to vehicles so that visitors can find solitude in a natural setting without needing a four-wheel-drive vehicle to drive farther south. The sand on North Beach is usually firmly packed so two-wheel-drive vehicles can normally travel on it with little problem.Ĭlosed Beach extends from there approximately 4.5 miles to another row of pylons marking its southern boundary.
